The Importance of Quality in Your Business

Why Strong Foundations Matter for Growth

Growth is exciting. New customers, bigger contracts, and fresh opportunities all signal that your business is moving in the right direction. But growth also brings pressure, more moving parts, more decisions, and more chances for something to slip through the cracks.

That is why quality matters far more than many business owners realize.

Quality is not just about having a good product or service. It is about building a business that can run consistently, solve problems quickly, and stay strong as demand increases.

QARS Solutions Global founder and chief quality strategist Sharon Yvonne Miles has spent more than 37 years helping organizations understand how quality affects every part of business performance. In her experience, most companies do not struggle because they lack ambition. They struggle because the systems supporting that ambition are not strong enough.

As she explains, “The biggest mistake organizations make is treating quality as a department rather than a business discipline.” That single misunderstanding often leads businesses to overlook quality until a problem appears.

Don’t Wait for Something to Go Wrong

Many businesses only start paying attention to quality when a problem shows up, such as a customer complaint, a missed deadline, a failed launch, or a regulator asking hard questions. By then, the damage has already begun.

“Too many leaders think quality begins when something goes wrong,” Sharon says. “By that point, quality has already been neglected. Real quality is not a reaction at the end. It is an intention at the beginning.”

When quality is built into everyday decisions, you see fewer surprises and less chaos. Teams know what is expected. Communication improves. Problems are spotted earlier, before they become expensive.

Sharon adds, “When quality is not built into leadership, planning, accountability, communication, and execution, the business pays for it. Profit erodes. Trust weakens. Rework grows. Decision-making suffers. Growth becomes unstable.”

For business owners, that instability can affect everything from customer retention to future opportunities.

Growth Requires More Than Good Intentions

Many businesses have strong goals and great ideas, but growth quickly reveals whether their systems can support it.

In Nevada, entrepreneurial energy is high. Our state currently ranks among the fastest in the nation for employer business growth per 1,000 residents, according to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Yet roughly 24.2% of new businesses here close within their first year, a slightly higher failure rate than the national average. Recent analyses of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that more than 1 in 5 new businesses nationwide fail within their first year, and nearly half close their doors within five years.

That reality is one of the reasons Sharon founded QARS Solutions in 2005. “I started QARS Solutions because I saw too many businesses with real potential struggle because they lacked the structure, discipline, and oversight needed for sustainable success,” she explains.

Across industries, the pattern was the same: organizations wanted growth, innovation, and profit, but were chasing those outcomes without the systems and controls required to support them. That gap creates unnecessary risk. Growth may still happen, but without structure, it becomes much harder to sustain.

Understanding What Needs Protection

Guarding Your “Eggs” Before They Crack

In her 2025 book, Who’s Watching Your Hen House? How To Protect and Scale Your Business for Success: Guard Your Eggs, Grow Your Business, Sharon uses a farm analogy to explain how quality really works inside a business.

On a farm, every function matters. There are roles, responsibilities, timing, protection, and accountability. In this picture:

–  The eggs represent what your business values most: revenue, reputation, opportunities, product, customer trust, and future growth.

–   The hens and the hen house represent the production of your product/services.

–   The rooster represents the structure that protects those things.

“If the hen house is not properly built, watched, maintained, and protected, the eggs are at risk,” she explains. If leadership is weak, processes are unclear, or controls are missing, the business is exposed in the same way.

For a Vegas-area business, that might look like:

–   A popular restaurant that loses regulars because food quality and service are inconsistent from one visit to the next.

–  A booming home-services company that starts missing appointments and double-booking as demand grows, damaging its reputation.

In both cases, the “eggs” were valuable, but the “hen house” was not strong enough to protect them.

Quality Is Also a Leadership Habit

One of the most important parts of Sharon’s core beliefs and business philosophy is that quality begins with mindset. She explains, “I believe quality is not just a business principle. It is a life principle.” That perspective moves quality beyond procedures and into leadership behavior.

Quality = Mindset in Action. It is not limited to products, services, or technical systems. It begins with how we think, what we value, how we decide, what we allow, what we protect, and how consistently we follow through.”

For business owners, this shows up in simple, daily choices:

–   How clearly do you set expectations for your team?

–   How consistently do you follow through on standards?

–   How do you protect your customers’ experience when things get busy?

She also emphasizes how quality shapes outcomes in practical ways.

“The quality of your thinking affects the quality of your actions. The quality of your environment affects the quality of your performance. The quality of your systems affects the quality of your outcomes.”

That connection is often what separates businesses that grow steadily from those that struggle with recurring setbacks.

Where QARS Solutions Makes the Difference

Understanding that quality matters is one thing. Knowing how to strengthen it inside your business is another.

This is where QARS Solutions Global provides practical support.

The firm helps organizations:

–  Find hidden weaknesses in their operations.

–  Improve internal systems and processes.

–  Strengthen compliance practices.

–  Build readiness for future growth, investment, and bigger opportunities.

Through strategic quality valuation services such as DealReady℠, quality advisory support, executive-level compliance guidance, and structured readiness assessments, QARS helps leaders see where they stand and what needs attention before higher-stakes situations arise.

The focus is not simply on correcting problems. It is on building stronger foundations before those problems interfere with progress. Sharon explains, “This work changes outcomes. It protects what people have built and helps position them for what comes next.” For companies preparing for expansion, partnerships, investment, or simply stronger day-to-day performance, that kind of readiness can make a measurable difference.

Building for Long-Term Success

Quality often becomes most valuable when businesses recognize it early rather than later. A strong foundation gives you stability, better decisions, and more control as your business grows.

As Sharon says, “If the business foundation is weak, success becomes difficult to sustain. Quality is what helps hold that foundation together.” That message speaks directly to business owners who want growth that lasts.

Her final reminder captures the heart of the work behind QARS Solutions: “Quality is not just what a business produces. It is how people think, lead, protect, and sustain what matters.”

For businesses looking ahead, quality is not something to revisit later. It is something worth building into the business now.

Ready to strengthen what you have built? QARS Solutions offers more than guidance. It offers a disciplined path forward, grounded in experience, structure, and long-term business readiness.
