The Shops at Summerlin

The Shops at Summerlin

By Tom Warden

As we prepare to open The Shops at Summerlin this fall, we’re excited to introduce both the first-class shopping center that Summerlin residents have longed for over the years, and a key component of the future Downtown Summerlin. Downtown Summerlin may be taking shape in the heart of our master-planned community, but it will really serve all of Southern Nevada. Located west of Town Center Drive and just east of the Las Vegas Beltway (between Sahara Avenue and Red Rock Resort) it has been a part of the overall vision for the Summerlin master plan since 1990, when The Howard Hughes Corporation was first mapping out what has become one of America’s most successful communities. The Shops at Summerlin is remarkably similar to the concepts first dreamt up almost 25 years ago in principle service as the hub for shopping, dining and entertainment. We’re excited to see this centerpiece of Summerlin coming to life in the heart of the community!

Fashion will be a major focus of the 106-acre, 1.6-million-square-foot open air center, with top brands including Michael Kors, Sephora, True Religion and Victoria’s Secret among the still-growing roster of tenants. Macy’s and Dillard’s are already constructing what will become two of the leading anchor stores at The Shops at Summerlin. A third major anchor store is still in the works. Other popular tenants coming to The Shops at Summerlin will include Nordstrom Rack, American Eagle, The Art of Shaving, Bath & Body Works, Buckle, Clark’s, Everything But Water, It’Sugar, Old Navy, Pandora, Resto Lounge, Sur La Table, Teavana and Ulta. When it opens this fall, The Shops at Summerlin will feature more than 125 stores, restaurants and entertainment venues in a vibrant streetscape environment, and aims to be the ultimate destination in Summerlin. The development was designed to be convenient for patrons, with pedestrian thoroughfares, dynamic storefronts, and a mix of retail, culinary and entertainment tenants. The shops will be the perfect place to make a quick stop, or serve as a great way to spend time exploring for the day. Mixing in a little bit of work with all that play, a nine-story Class A office building, One Summerlin, is also expected to open later this year. Just as we’re seeing excitement among retailers who want to be a part of the shops, demand is high for new office space in the core of Summerlin. Another 200 acres adjacent to The Shops at Summerlin will eventually make up the rest of Downtown, a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood that will feature more office space and streetside retail as well as higher density urban living. The area includes a substantial outdoor recreational component. Construction on those elements is expected to begin once The Shops at Summerlin is complete. We’re seeing the Las Vegas economy stabilize with jobs beginning to grow again, and this development will contribute to, and symbolize, this resurgence. By the time it opens, The Shops at Summerlin will have employed close to 2,000 construction workers, and another 2,000 permanent jobs will be created when the center opens. Downtown Summerlin and The Shops at Summerlin will no doubt become valuable additions to the entire Las Vegas Valley. The location is convenient for residents from almost any part of the valley, especially for those in the northwest and southwest parts of town who want to sample what Summerlin has to offer.
